Today I am ashamed to be called an Egyptian

Here are pictures of today's sectarian fights in Alexandria:

The banner on the left reads: Stop the persecution of Copts in Egypt

The one on the right reads: Till when?

This happening in my country??!! Someone please wake me from this nightmare.

In the absence of a Cross, Quran, or a banner, you couldn't really differentiate between the two.

  1. Don’t be ashamed to be an Egyptian, BP. There is no use being ashamed of your country.

You should always love your country and be patriotic even if, at times, you are ashamed of some your fellow countrymens’ behavior.

Egypt has a long and great history. The violence that has been occurring over the past few days isn’t the end-all-and-be-all of Egyptian history.

The difference is that some are attacking while the others are fighting back. The Copts’ anger is more than justified. They are being quasi-persecuted in Egypt. Ila mata? As a Lebanese I know that the cycle of violence will lead them to nowhere, especially since they constitue less then 10% of the population. But I understand their anger.

  5. Yup bro, dun be ashamed. I hate what’s happening in Darfur now but I’m still proud of who I am. 3000 years ago the northern part of Sudan and Egypt where one and we were one people. We have a rich history. Life is a rollercoaster ride and right now we are at the lowest of points. It’s our job to raise up the standards back again. I believe when we all hit rock bottom we’re gonna realize that sad reality and then some real changes will start.

It is either persecution or it isn’t. It may be ‘mild persecution’ or ’severe persecution’ but quasi-persecution? ;-)

Yes I am also ashamed and sick of what is happening in our country…It seems we misunderstand the most essential things about both religions and yet we have a lot to learn the hard way…Instead of talking to each other we just want to repeat the lessons from the history of troubled nations..Hell yeah!!! it is in gods interest to eliminate one another…This is a wrong answer to real problems…We should also salute the wonderful government for doing a great job in teaching us how to intimidate each other!!!.

  11. This argument is both irrelevant and offensive. Just look around the world at any place where the Muslim infestation has spread. Just look at 1400 years of history. How long can some of you deny the obvious?

There is no way that civilization is safe as long as Islam exists. There is simply no alternative to the destruction of Islam and all of its savage and barbaric followers. It matters not in the least what individual savages choose to call themselves - Wahabis, Salafis, Shiites, etc. et ad nauseum.

It is long past time for action. Islam and its followers must be extirpated from the Earth.

    ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS!

  12. Thank-you BP for the excellent pictures, painful though they are. We are ALL going to find ugly scenes in our home countries as the fanatics attack each segment they hate in turn. Each of us, whether not the right kind of Muslim, or Copt, Christian of some persuasion, Jew, or just general infidels, will find ourselves attacked in turn in our home cities. That’s if we let the fanatics continue to have the only say.

It’s time for people of good will around the world to organize, each in their own cities and towns, to stand together and be seen to do so, against these evil people who want to kill or maim others simply because they don’t like their religion. Or their race. Or the tribe they come from. If you can’t say something positive, don’t say anything and don’t do evil!

  16. The really tragic thing about all this is that the Copts are the true Egyptians. They are the descendents of the people who built the pyramids and the high civilizations of ancient Egypt. The Muslims are descended from the Arab savages who overran and conquered the country in the name of their bloodthirsty false god “Allah” and the death cult of Islam.

  17. Matt: “…regardless of these terrible crimes being commited in the name of Christianity or Islam in Alexandria…” - what are you talking about man? It sound as if you cannot tell the difference between attackers and victims. It should be clear to all of us now that Islam wants to bring all mankind under Muslim rule either as believers or subject communities. “There is no god but Allah” sums this international vision. Violence is a key element of Islamic life. The Copts of Egypt are paying the price of resisting Islamic imperial domination. In the meantime, our left-wing “intellectuals” morons are engaging in a “dialogue of civilizations” with a culture of death (what other words can you use to describe suicide bombings?)

is it really true what you say?
or are you just another prejudiced with no history education?
culture of death existed in almost every part of the world.
What about the shameful massacres of the crusades when they first entered jerusalem?
The crusades lasted over 2 centuries.
what about the perpetual wars between christian European states & the religious wars in the medieval times?
what about the great war that killed more than 9 million? ended to start another big one that killed over 50 million? wouldn’t you call this a culture of Evil & Death?
Why not mention the japanese who first started suicide missions during WW2 or has it slipped by your weak mind?
I can go on with examples from history but what is the point? sure muslims have a great problem at present, regardless of the reasons which the west carries some responsibility in, & face enormous challenges which they will have to confront sooner or later,
but to call any intellectual a moron,
to call muslims a culture of death ommiting others.

To portray copts(who have rightful grievances)as resisting Islamic Imperial domination is absolute bollocks. fancy words for someone like you but they are meaningless.
those copts you defend have the same mentality as the muslims you are assailing but lack the power that muslims have. I am only looking at the crises from a different angle than your prejudiced ignorant view.

I have to take issue with that. Extremist Muslims find the source of their hatred with their interpretation of Islam. There is nothing, inherently, in Coptic Christianity which demands the same.

I’m not condoning reactive violence and I feel sorry for any innocent person, Muslim or Christian who may be injured or killed during this violence, but I doubt that you would see Copts throwing rocks at Muslim funeral mourners without provocation even if they were the dominant religion in society.

Gary, I suspect, is an excellent example of the moral relativism that pervades liberal thinking in the West.

Islamists always bring up the goddam crusades to justify what is being done in the name of Islam today… The Crusades took place in the Middle Ages and were a reaction to–guess what Alienkain: the destruction of christian culture and place of worship by the “religion of peace”. Suicide bombers and terrorists have nothing in common with regular fighting armies. Yes there was war throughout our history but the Western world did not invent war and conflict. It is part of life until we evolve and for me, Islam is it is practice today is a direct path toward the stone age (beheading, stoning for adultery, martyrdom operations, these contemporary practices are a product of Islam)… and I don’t think Islam has the will or the ability to reform itself

They are indeed, but they aren’t the only decendents. Many of the Muslims are as well :).

“The Muslims are descended from the Arab savages who overran and conquered the country in the name of their bloodthirsty false god Allah and the death cult of Islam. ”

Actually, many of the Muslims of Egypt are converts to Islam. They converted over years from Christianity and other religions during the time that the Arab raiders controlled Egypt. The Arab raiders had little interest in converting the Egyptians, or any people for that matter to Islam. The reason for that being is the rulers enjoyed levying higher taxes on non Muslims to help line their own pockets. As a result, many Christians and those of other faiths converted to Islam to avoid these taxes.

I you didn’t know, while the Church was deystroying many western monuments, literature and knowledge, the Arabs were preserving it, so I would hardly call that “savage.”

Fer cryin’ out loud. That’s as bad as people going on about slavery in the US when that ended in the 1800s but you can find blacks enslaving other blacks today, right this minute, in Darful, Rwanda and lots of places. TODAY!

Christians do not have, as a characteristic, the habit of running into the streets looking to kill other people as Muslims do. Muslims cannot stand any other religion to exist. YET CHRISTIANITY AND JUDAISM ARE FAR FAR FAR OLDER THAN ISLAM!

The Muslim is taught discrimination with his mother’s milk. That’s the bottom line. They ‘act out’ from malice and spite which has been taught to them by their mothers and their families from the moment they were born.

In truth, most don’t know any other way to think. But some do and the very fact this blog exists is testament to that. But is it enough that a few outposts of sanity exist in a sea of malicious, spiteful Muslims who hate me simply because I’m not one of them?

    I don’t think so!

This ’small but unfortunate incident’ has been happening in France where many Christian churches and Jewish Synagogues were torched last fall (I have a complete list from Le Monde if you want it) as well as in Britain in Birmingham and London where some churches were burned after the cartoons were published. In Denmark churches were burned after the cartoons came out as well as in Malmo, Sweden, in the Nederlands and in Belgium. Each of these countries have experienced church burnings recently, since the cartoons (multiple burnings, not just one or two here and there). Even Australia last fall, at Cronulla Beach, had Muslim violence when the men aggravated the Australian men at the beach by making sexist remarks about the women’s beachwear in order to provoke the Aussie guys. Of course, the Aussie’s reacted and that’s what these Muslim Middle Eastern men were waiting for. They all piled into their cars, went to the mosque for an hour, then flooded out of the mosque into their cars and into the surrounding neighbourhoods where they then piled out with pipes and bats challenging the locals to come out of their houses or there’d be more violence. I have a link for this story from the Sydney Morning Herald if anyone wants it.

The point is, a certain segment of Islam is violent and really likes to throw their weight around and THE REST OF YOU AND WHINING AND SAYING, WELL IT’S NOT ME AND WE CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

Well…if you can’t do anything about ostracizing these people and letting them know the rest of Islam doesn’t appreciate what they’re doing IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS, then Islam is going to get a BIG BLACK EYE.

What does that mean? Just that people won’t visit your countries, buy your products (whatever they are) or have anything to do with you. They’ll find and are alreay looking for alternative fuels and one day if you think things are bad now…well one day you’ll wake up isolated in the desert and no one will let you come to visit them or will trade with you or pretty much anything. After the threat of Iran is dealt with, there won’t be much need to be ‘best buddies’ with Egypt, or Saudi Arabia or Indonesia or any of the places that currently hate all of us ‘infidels’ (another word that should be BANNED. It’s a damned insult!). The ‘infidels’ won’t want to bother with you and it’s no skin off their noses what happens to your ’shitty little countries’ after they stop bothering with you.

Now…put that way…it might be an idea for the REST OF ISLAM TO START COMING DOWN HARD ON THESE ASSHOLES. DON’T YOU THINK?

In fact what we have here is a worldwide CAMPAIGN by Islamic men of a certain age, goaded on and encouraged by their imams to start a worldwide war with those who are not Muslim. This IS SERIOUS BUSINESS. IF YOU ARE MUSLIM…YOU MAY HAVE TO MAKE A CHOICE ABOUT WHICH WAY YOU GO. Will you become one with the Islamists? Or choose sides and fight against them in whatever way you can?

Will you be able to stand up and be counted? That goes for everyone. If the CEO of Arla Dairies in Denmark folds and agrees to take a discount on their products and other demeaning requests to again sell their products in the Middle East, that is one kind of ’surrender’. Comment by foreign devil — April 18, 2006 @ 10:16 pm

  47. Sadly, Foreign Devil is absolutely right. The is no doubt that Islam carries in its bosom the seeds of violence. I blame it all on its great prophet, a man that did so many vile things - as recording in Islam’s own accounts. I am not talking about gossip or parking tickets, either. The hadiths very clearly tell us that Mohammad tortured, raped, enslaved and murdered. It even says that Mohammad was a wife-beater (unless Alisha’s words ‘he hit me and caused me pain’ are ‘out of context’ as Muslims often say). I don’t mean to offend Muslims, but that is what is written and I did not write it. The fact is also that one can find anything one wants in the Quran: love, hate, be nice, kill, etc.. It is just a matter of picking the verse you want to use. Until Muslims accept these basic facts, there will be no end to the oppression and violence. These people are only doing what Mohammad did.

I fear for the Copts. They will face an increasingly hostile majority and there is nothing they can do to change things.

Islam is taking the road to doom and destruction, and it wants to take as many victims as it can with it. The so-called ‘moderate’ Muslims are either dishonest or in denial.

Radical Muslims kill, moderates make excuses.

Actually, foreign devil, lynchings still take place today (not in the same manner it used to be of course, where the entire town, men, women, children and elderly go out to watch it as if it’s a major sport or entertainment event), it’s just more discrete and involves fewer individuals, and by the way, lynchings didn’t end in the 1800’s, lynchings (involving an entire town) were performed through the sixties.

  51. Wow all of you who say that islam is a violent religion are absolutly ignoret. I can’t belive that us americans think that way. you should all burn in hell if thats how you respect islam. Yes there are “radical” mulims but u know what all of you who are leaving these horefic comments are “radical” ur selfs. When one of you go to an arab nation an meet the kind people of the country and still think that islam is an awful religion then you are absolutly ignoret and a piece of shit. Belive it or not i am american but both my mother and father are 100% egyptian. me basicly seeing both sides of this brawl thinks that the arab are more intelligent than you absolutly fithy americans leaving these coments. dont get me wrong i have nothing against americans but i do have something against americans that think they know all about islam. if you could read arabic i would tell you to read the “original” quran and not what ever you are getting ur info from. and you might just understand if you acctually have a heart. thank you.

  53. I agree with James Matamoros when he says “The really tragic thing about all this is that the Copts are the true Egyptians. They are the descendents of the people who built the pyramids and the high civilizations of ancient Egypt. The Muslims are descended from the Arab savages who overran and conquered the country in the name of their bloodthirsty false god Allah and the death cult of Islam.”

Now what can the Copts do? They obviously can’t pack their bags and leave Egypt.

  54. I do not think that what is happening in Egypt, but failed sectarian shame, but inevitable since you talked in a Muslim country where such disasters … As if I were in a country like America, you are not entitled shame because their religion is essentially falsified and all the holy books - Quran distorted … You make sure that the shame of an Islamic country exercised such acts … You love …
