It seems that MB leaders are not just extreme lunatics but they’re ignorants as well. Dr. Essam El Arian, an MB leader whom many consider to be the most moderate, said something that really made me want to scream.
When asked about the MB’s program clause that bars Christians from running for the president office in Egypt, his answer was as follows:
“In America a Catholic cannot become president and this is based upon the understanding of the American constitution. And the first time that a Catholic ruled America, Kennedy, he was killed after a year and half in office.” (Ana Ikhwan; Arabic link)
Now, I am sure all you Americans out there are having a nice time calling this guy an idiot. He simply doesn’t know how to differentiate between the fact that failing to gain enough votes to become president and being barred completely from running in a presidential election. While it might be true that Kennedy was America’s only Catholic, but that doesn’t mean that Catholic Americans cannot run for president of the USA.
The world is marching forward and we’re still dicussing whether a Christian and a woman can run for president in Egypt. What a wretched nation we are. We had a Christian prime ministers, Christian foreign ministers, and a Jewish finance minister in the first half of last century and we, in 2007, in God damned 2007, are still discussing whether a Christian or a woman can become president. *spit*
This is the funniest statement I’ve read all day. Thanks, MB. You’ve made my day.

You can either have an ideology or logic. The statement is indeed very funny

Hillary might get elected, but I doubt we’ll elect a woman any time soon.

In addition to Catholics, we nasty evil Americans also bar all women, Italians, polar bears and anybody named “Chaz” from running for president. It’s true! Google it!

Uh oh, America must be anti-semite… We “bar” Jews from being President!
At least I can’t think of a jewish american president
Such twisted logic!

An ignorant person is an “ignoramus”.

There are a few factual errors in such a small statement. For starters, Kennedy isn’t the only Catholic to run; John Kerry (who narrowly lost to Bush in the last presidential election) is also Catholic. Kennedy was assassinated two years into his term, but he is widely revered within the US as one of the greatest American Presidents, an image that his assassination only enhanced (”oh had he live,d he would have done such great things” versus “he is here and not doing what I want.”)

The goddamn Ikhwan are LIARS!!!!
All they do is lie. They lie how they are going to be “moderate” when they come to power. They lie to Western audiences and they lie to the Egyptian audience.
The MB are liars!
What kind of stupid freakin logic is this Terrorist “Doctor” Al Arian spinning?? And the sad thing is Egypt’s illiterate population will believe him!

It’s not that the MB is a bunch of ignoramuses, but that they have an utter and total contempt for what passes as the truth. So they project themselves upon the west… “They are religiously biased against catholic presidents.” “They assasinate catholic presidents.” Speak for yourself, MB.

JFK was assassinated for being Catholic? I thought he was assassinated by a socialist extremist (LH Oswald) for threatening Castro?
Comment by CMAR II — October 16, 2007 @ 7:48 pm
I don’t find it funny at all. To me it suggests that in Egypt there are many who still don’t quite understand the meaning of democracy. Or if they do, they think it is just a facade, a Western charade, to dupe the people or something. Why play at pretend, El Arian says. The only difference between us and them is that here we legislate these restrictions while there they practice it. And here the example, Kennedy, who “ruled America.”. Note the use of “rule”. It is also indicative of a certain perception of leaders as “rulers”, whether elected or not.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK), the thirty-fifth President of the United States, was an Irish Catholic. In your face!
Comment by Amir M — October 17, 2007 @ 2:15 am
Yeah, and I’m a German- American Catholic here to re4mind y’all that Al Smith (despite his name an Irish Catholic out of NY’s Tammany Hall) was the first ever Catholic to be nominated for president.
BOOYAH!
He did it in 1928, as the Democratic nominee against Hoover. There have been 3 (I believe) Catholic Vice Presidential nominees William Miller (R) in 1964,
Edmund Muskie (D) in 1968, and Sargent Shriver (D) in 1972. But none of them were on the winning ticket.
John Kerry (D) 2004 was of course also a Catholic, albeit a very goofy looking one.
